About the event
Guest conductor Shohei Kobayashi curates a concert inspired by Portland’s 2020 racial justice protests, the militarized response against the protesters, and the opportunity to envision a more just and peaceful Portland.
Along with music by David Lang and Margaret Bonds, the concert includes three world premiere commissions pairing Portland poets (including poet A. Mimi Sei, poet-in-residence S. Renee Mitchell and spoken word artist Vin Shambry) and composers (Kenji Bunch, Kimberly Osberg, and Judy A. Rose). The oil paintings of internationally-famed artist (and Portlander!), Henk Pander, depicting scenes of 2020 provide a powerful backdrop for this concert—generously on loan to Alberta House from Vanport Mosaic.
Performers: Shohei Kobayashi, guest conductor Kenji Bunch, composer S. Renee Mitchell, poet-in-residence Kimberly R. Osberg, composer Judy A. Rose, composer A. Mimi Sei, poet Vin Shambry, poet Resonance Ensemble
